Including a herpes diet plan into your lifestyle can be one of the most effective things you can do to reduce the severity and the frequency of herpes outbreaks.  Depending on your current way of life, including a herpes diet plan shouldn’t be difficult at all.  You may only find yourself tweaking it here and there and there may be some things that you need to re-evaluate and prioritize but if you really want to take control over the virus then you may need to make some adjustments to your daily diet and the types of foods that you consume.

A herpes diet is not only about “what not to eat”, but equally important is “what to eat”.  Foods containing large amounts of the amino acid arginine should be avoided as much as possible.  The herpes simplex virus needs large amounts of arginine in order for the virus to replicate itself.

Unfortunately, two of my favorite foods, chocolate and almonds are now on the list of things that I shouldn’t be eating.  This doesn’t mean that every time you indulge in these foods, you’ll have an outbreak.  You just have to eat them in moderation or make sure that you supplement your diet with the proper ratio of lysine for herpes.  However, if you’re anything like me, you can’t just eat a few almonds.  More times than I care to admit, I can trace my outbreaks back to over eating almonds.

The key to having a healthy natural treatment for herpes is to balance the lysine and arginine ratio. If you eat foods that contain a high ratio of the amino acid arginine then counteract it by eating foods that are also high in the amino acid lysine.  Although this is a very good way of controlling the amounts of lysine and arginine, often it is not practical so taking a lysine supplement may be a better way.

A Herpes Diet Should Also Include Foods That Are Good For Your Skin

Although Lysine is very good for a herpes diet,  it is not the only nutrient that the body requires to ward off herpes outbreaks. Your skin should also be nourished with essential nutrients that are needed to resist an infection and repair itself.

Make sure that you are getting plenty of zinc, vitamin C and bioflavonoids in your diet to help protect, nourish and strengthen your skin.

This will help your skin to heal more quickly during outbreaks and will also help make your body more resistant to herpes symptoms that occur on your skin.
