Foods High In Lysine

Eating foods high in Lysine and low in arginine is essential for anyone wanting to reduce the severity and frequency of herpes outbreaks.

Lysine for herpes intake can be increased by increasing consumption of foods high in lysine.  Some examples are:

  •     Most fruits and veggies
  •     Milk and dairy products
  •     Eggs
  •     Fish
  •     Chicken
  •     Lamb
  •     Beef

Basically most legumes and animal proteins are good.  Reducing consumption of lysine-poor foods such as grains and refined sugars is important too.

It is also important to understand that food preparation methods play an important part in the process too!  Try not to use a reducing sugar (fructose, glucose or lactose) when preparing foods high in lysine.  that reduce the amount of bioavailable lysine include heating of protein-containing foods  a reducing sugar (e.g., fructose, glucose, or lactose), heating protein-containing foods in the presence of sucrose and yeast, or cooking at high temperatures or in the absence of moisture.

With respect to temperature and moisture, boiling or poaching a high-protein food would preserve lysine to a greater extent than would grilling, broiling, or frying.
